A small pilgrimage
Nyksund is what happens when a place is loved back to life — slowly, by hand, with respect.
Two nights between Myre's bright harbour and Nyksund's reborn quays is enough to feel the Arctic re-set the nervous system. The Queen's Route carries the heart-day; the sea takes care of the rest.

Nyksund
Wooden quays, fresh-baked bread, the soft hum of the Arctic — once abandoned, now slowly alive again under careful hands.

Stø
A working fishing village at the tip of Langøya — the natural midpoint of the Queen's Route, with sun on the harbour wall and very good coffee.

Anda fyr
A small RIB sail from Myre to the Anda lighthouse island — thousands of puffins, white-tailed eagles, and a midnight sun that forgets to leave.
Three gentle days
Day 1 · Arrival
Øksnes, Langøya
Land in Myre's bright working harbour, pick up provisions, then travel the single-lane road over the heather pass to Nyksund — a fishing village abandoned in the 1970s and slowly, gently brought back to life. Settle into a wooden quay cabin, walk the breakwater, and let the Arctic light do its first work on you.
“On the breakwater, listen for the slowest sound in the harbour. Let your breath match it.”
Day 2 · Heart day
Nyksund ⇄ Stø loop
The walk Vesterålen is loved for. Climb the cairned mountain route from Nyksund to a high open ridge at ~290 m, then descend to the fishing village of Stø for a slow lunch. Return along the wild coastal low-route, with puffins, sea-eagles and a sea that never quite settles. A shorter coastal-only option keeps the body soft.
“At the high cairn, say one quiet thank-you — to a person, a place, or this body that carried you here.”
Day 3 · Closing
Nyksund · Myre · open sea
A short morning walk on the empty headland north of Nyksund — the body's quiet thank-you. Back to Myre at midday for a small RIB out to the Anda lighthouse: puffins by the thousand, white-tailed eagles, and (in late July) almost-certain whales on the far side of the bank.
“Out at sea, watch one puffin for thirty seconds without naming it. Just see.”
Practical notes
Fly into Stokmarknes (SKN) from Bodø or Tromsø (Widerøe, 30 min), then a ≈ 45 min transfer north to Myre, and a final 15 min over the single-lane mountain road to Nyksund. From Lofoten, the Fiskebøl → Melbu ferry is a beautiful 25-minute crossing.
Holmvik Brygge in Nyksund (nyksund.com) is the soul of the village — restored wharf rooms, shared kitchens, and the best small library in the Arctic. Ekspedisjonen next door is cosy and quirky. In Myre, the comfortable Myre Kysthotell is the natural first or last night.
A 15 km marked loop between Nyksund and Stø, climbing to a high ridge at ~290 m before descending to Stø for lunch and returning along the coast. Trail is well-cairned (red T-marks) and well-used in summer. A shorter ~8 km coastal-only option follows the low route both ways — almost flat, family-friendly.
Book the puffin sail with Puffin Safari from Bleik (45 min from Myre) or the Anda lighthouse sails from Andenes / Myre via Visit Vesterålen. Whale safaris run daily in late July — sperm whales are near-certain.
Day 1 and Day 3 are gentle for children of any age. The full Dronningruta is walkable by kids ~8+ at a steady pace; the coastal low-route option (8 km, almost flat) is perfect for younger legs. Cold-water swims along the way are brief, bracing, and very welcome.

Trailhead
Base in Myre (Vesterålen) at Holmvik Brygge — then drive 25 minutes north to the small public lot above Nyksund (last 2 km is a one-lane gravel road, drive gently). The Dronningruta loop begins at the Nyksund harbour signboard; the Queen herself walked it in 1994.
Shape & time
Ferry-assisted loop·Full Dronningruta loop: 6–7 hours · 15 km · +700 m. Shorter coast leg only: 3–4 hours.·Spirited
When to begin
Begin at Nyksund by 9:00 a.m. (clockwise: high first, easy return).·The ridge is far more honest in morning light, the wind is usually softer, and you reach Stø just in time for waffles. Walking it clockwise also means the hardest climb is on fresh legs and the easy coast on tired ones.
Food, water & rest
Nyksund: Ekspedisjonen café (open 11–18 in summer) and Holmvik Brygge serve hearty meals. Stø: a small café and the whale-safari kiosk. NOTHING in between — pack 2 L of water, a real lunch, and a snack for the high point. Coffee thermos is the local handshake.
How the path moves · how to move with it
Terrain
Marked T-red. The first climb out of Nyksund is steep and rooted; the ridge is open, rolling and exposed to wind. One short chain-assisted section above the sea on the high traverse. The low return is family-easy. Bring real grip — slick rock and wet moss in any weather.
Presence on the path
Walk the Queen's ridge as she did — unhurried, hands free, eyes on the next stone, not the next viewpoint. Out of Nyksund the climb is rooted and steep; shorten the stride, lengthen the breath. At the chain traverse, turn the body to the wall, three points of contact, no rush. The coastal return is for the legs to forgive you — let them.
Small doorways · trusted hands · slow rewards
Curated by hand
Reborn village
Holmvik Brygge, Nyksund
the wooden house that brought Nyksund back to life. Long shared tables, hand-written menu, generous fish stews.
Gallery café
Ekspedisjonen, Nyksund
old fish-trade office reopened by an artist. Coffee, soup, books, paintings. Open 11–18 in summer.
Halfway reward
Stø waffles
the small café at the harbour — fresh waffles with sour cream and cloudberry jam. Eat slowly; you've earned it.
Whale boat
Sea Safari Andenes
30 minutes north of Myre — sperm whales 8–10 NM offshore. Book the morning trip for the calmest sea.
Fish & self-cooking
Eat fresh: Holmvik Brygge in Nyksund writes the daily menu by hand from whatever came off the boat — long shared tables, hearty fish stews, generous portions. Ekspedisjonen café for lighter lunches. Cook simply: there is no shop in Nyksund — provision in Myre at the Eurospar (fresh fish counter, ask for the catch of the day). The rorbu kitchen handles a one-pan supper of pan-fried saithe with potatoes and frozen lingonberries beautifully. A thermos of coffee is the local handshake; bring one on the ridge.
Serenity score
A Queen walked here in 1994 and the ridge has been holding presence ever since. Few cars reach Nyksund, no phone signal reaches the high point, and the loop ends with waffles at Stø. Effort earns silence — the deepest kind.
“A queen walked here once. Walk it slowly and you'll understand why.”
