An invitation

A morning hike, an afternoon swim, an evening whale-watching sail from Andenes — the gentlest possible day in the Arctic.

An easy, joyful climb from the painted fishing village of Bleik straight up onto Måtinden's grassy back. The pyramidal puffin island of Bleiksøya floats just offshore, and the beach itself runs 2.5 km of perfect white sand.

Soul Signature

Exceptional · Måtinden ridge above Bleik

Best for a walk that lingers long after it ends — just know that the distance and ascent ask for hiking legs.

You get a day you will still be describing next year; the cost is that 3 hours and 403 m of climbing rule out small legs.

At its best in first light, the long light of September.

The verdict

Walk this one on your best day

Give it 3 h and start early; the quiet is the point, and it does not survive midday.

Who this walk suits

  • Suits confident young walkers with breaks planned.
  • Quiet enough to hear the weather change.
  • Share transport where you can; the ground here is slow to heal.

Every dimension is measured from the route's real GPX shape — distance, ascent and time on foot — then ranked against the whole PureSoul library, and read the same way on hiking, walking and running. The chips under each bar are the raw inputs, so you can check the number yourself. Nothing here is sponsored.

Easy to plan, easy to love.

Grass and gentle stone underfoot, never exposed. Trail shoes, a wind layer, water. Suitable for children from ~7 years.

Hotel Marena in Andenes (modern, harbour-front) or Bleik Sea Cabins for the full village experience.

Book the afternoon sail with Hvalsafari Andenes — 3-hour boat, near-guaranteed sperm whale sightings in summer.

Trailhead

Bleik village, Andøya — free parking at the southern end of the long white-sand beach, signed 'Måtinden'. From Andenes: 12 minutes. From Sortland: 1 h 15.

Shape & time

Out-and-back·2.5–3 hours · 6 km · +408 m·Moderate

When to begin

18:00 for the golden hour summit.·Andøya's evening light puts Bleiksøya in warm gold, the puffins are still home, and the beach below is at its softest. The morning is fine too, but the evening is unforgettable.

Food, water & rest

Bleik village: small Joker grocery + one café. No water on the trail. Carry 1 L, a snack, and a windproof shell — Andøya's wind is always honest.

Terrain & Presence Notes

How the path moves · how to move with it

Terrain

Short, steep grass-and-rock path. One easy scramble near the cairn — going straight up has no exposure. The optional traverse along the ridge has mild exposure on the south side; stay back if it's wet or windy.

Serenity score

93/100

Short climb, oversized reward. Bleiksøya floats below like a green ship, the puffins do the noticing for you, and the white-sand beach is waiting at the bottom for a midnight barefoot walk.

“Måtinden is small. The view from it is not.”
