The summit panorama
Reine and Sakrisøy on turquoise water, ringed by the sharpest peaks in Lofoten.
1 872 hand-laid stone steps to the iconic view of Reinefjord.
Trail essentials
An invitation
A short, steep, deeply rewarded climb. Take the morning light if you can; let the view do its slow work.
Built by Nepali Sherpas between 2017 and 2023, the staircase lifts you 448 m straight from the roadside to the most photographed panorama in Lofoten — Reine and Sakrisøy floating on turquoise water below jagged peaks.

Best for a walk that lingers long after it ends — just know that arriving without a car takes planning.
You get a day you will still be describing next year; the cost is that getting there cleanly takes planning.
At its best in first light, late spring through early autumn.
How deeply the walk stays with you. A walk people plan a year around. Give it a whole, unhurried day.
Stays with people longer than almost every walk in the library.
How quiet the trail feels — crowds, traffic noise, remoteness. Expect long stretches entirely to yourself.
Quieter than almost every walk in the library.
Wild ground and low-impact access — how gently you can arrive and walk. Good public-transport access; stay on the marked line.
Gentler on the ground than only 3% of the 236 walks we've measured.
Views, water, light and variety along the way. Continuous reward — allow extra hours simply for stopping.
More generous to look at than almost every walk in the library.
Suitability for mixed pace — distance, ascent and exposure. Fine for confident children from roughly eight upwards.
Easier to share than 91% of the 236 walks we've measured.
The verdict
Walk this one on your best day
Give it 3.5 h and bring whoever you like — the ground forgives a slow pace.
Who this walk suits
Every dimension is measured from the route's real GPX shape — distance, ascent and time on foot — then ranked against the whole PureSoul library, and read the same way on hiking, walking and running. The chips under each bar are the raw inputs, so you can check the number yourself. Nothing here is sponsored.

Reinefjord
Reine and Sakrisøy on turquoise water, ringed by the sharpest peaks in Lofoten.

Hamnøy
Sleep at Eliassen Rorbuer in Hamnøy — the most photographed cabins in Norway, 10 min from the trailhead.

Sakrisøy
Walk the bridges between Hamnøy, Sakrisøy and Reine in the afternoon — flat, quiet, perfect for tired legs.
Practical notes
Park at the signed P-area in the road tunnel mouth just north of Reine. The path begins 200 m back along the road and is impossible to miss.
1 872 stone steps — a continuous staircase. Steep, sometimes wet stone; trail shoes with grip, hiking poles helpful for the descent. Not recommended in heavy rain.
Eliassen Rorbuer in Hamnøy (rorbuer.no) — restored red fishermen's cabins right on the water. Reine Rorbuer is the alternative inside Reine itself.
If the staircase feels like too much, walk the flat bridge loop Hamnøy → Sakrisøy → Reine (3 km, no climb) for the same fjord at sea level.
Trail wisdom

Trailhead
Reinehalsen lot at the foot of the Sherpa staircase, E10 just before Reine — paid parking, ~40 spaces, fills before 8 a.m. Trailhead board at the bottom of the steps. From Hamnøy: 4 minutes by car.
Shape & time
Out-and-back·3–4 hours · 4 km · +448 m·Spirited
When to begin
Before 8 a.m. or after 17:00.·Parking and the staircase quietly empty in the early morning and evening. Late July is midnight sun — the light is honest at any hour, but you'll share the summit with three people instead of three hundred.
Food, water & rest
Nothing on the trail — no water, no shelter, no toilet. Carry 1.5 L per person and a packed lunch. Reine village (4 minutes) has a Joker, a bakery, and Anita's seafood for after.
How the path moves · how to move with it
Terrain
1 872 stable Sherpa-built stone steps — no scrambling, no chains, but real cardio and full wind exposure on the upper ridge. The very top platform is railed. Sturdy shoes only; the steps can be slick in rain.
Serenity score
1 872 honest steps. The cardio is the meditation — by the upper platform the breath has done all the thinking, and the archipelago glows back at you without asking anything in return.
“The steps were a gift from Nepal. The view is the gift that meets them.”
