The path, gently held

The classic Khumbu pilgrimage — Lukla's cliff-edge airstrip, the prayer-wheel villages of the Sherpa, Tengboche monastery in the shadow of Ama Dablam, and the long slow rise into thin, luminous air. Three defining days from Namche's acclimatisation ridge to Kala Patthar at 5,644 m.

Namche's Sherwi Khangba or Panorama Lodge are warm, family-run and famous with returning trekkers.

Headache, nausea, breathlessness at rest — descend, do not push on. Diamox as prescribed.

Leave lodges at 4:30 am for a sunrise summit. Head-torch essential. Everest Base Camp itself is visited the previous afternoon.

Expect -15 °C on the summit at dawn in October. Down mittens, balaclava, insulated flask of tea.

Most trekkers descend all the way to Pheriche or Pangboche the same day — the drop in altitude is medicine.
