The path, gently held

The Machame route — the 'Whisky Route' — is Kilimanjaro's most soulful line: five ecosystems in six days of walking, an acclimatisation profile that actually works, and a midnight summit push from Barafu that ends on the crater rim at Uhuru Peak, 5,895 m.

Walk high, sleep low: after arrival at Shira, do a 30-min stroll uphill before dinner. Every metre matters.

4 L per day, minimum. Add electrolytes — thin air dehydrates you before you feel thirsty.
