The oldest and longest way up — and the only route to the summit without via-ferrata or glacier. From the Olympia Skistadion through the roaring Partnachklamm gorge, up the wide Reintal valley to the Reintalangerhütte, then a steady climb t…o the Knorrhütte (2,052 m) and across the lunar Zugspitzplatt to the summit cross. The gentlest ascent, but a serious long day — most hikers overnight at the Reintalangerhütte or Knorrhütte.

Practical, gently arranged
T3 — mountain hiking. No via-ferrata, no glacier. The only route to the summit walkable in sturdy trekking boots.
Almost everyone overnights at the Reintalangerhütte (1,370 m) or Knorrhütte (2,052 m). Book DAV huts weeks ahead in summer.
Ride the Gletscherbahn from the summit down to Sonnalpin, then the Zahnradbahn to Garmisch — the traditional finish.

Through the dripping Höllentalklamm gorge, up to the Höllentalanger Hütte (1,381 m), across the shrinking Höllentalferner glacier (crampons + rope), and onto the Brett — a sec…ured Klettersteig that lifts you along dizzying cables and ladders to the summit ridge. A serious high-alpine day; standard for fit, experienced mountaineers.

Practical, gently arranged
T5 / Klettersteig B–C. Requires helmet, harness, via-ferrata set, plus crampons and rope for the glacier.
Sleep at the Höllentalanger Hütte the night before and start the glacier crossing at first light — the neve softens fast.
The Höllentalferner is retreating quickly; late-summer crossings expose blue ice and a widening bergschrund. Check current DAV conditions before you go.

The Austrian standard — steep, direct, and utterly wild. From Ehrwald (or the Tiroler Zugspitzbahn Talstation) up the Georg-Jäger-Steig to the Wiener-Neustädter Hütte (2,209 m), then the Stopselzieher ("cork-puller") Klettersteig — a narrow…, secured limestone chimney threading upward to the summit ridge. No glacier, but sustained via-ferrata terrain most of the way.

T5 / Klettersteig A–B. Sustained secured terrain; helmet + harness + via-ferrata set required.
Overnight at the Wiener-Neustädter Hütte the day before — the Stopselzieher is best climbed in the cool of morning.
The Tiroler Zugspitzbahn Talstation is a valid start, but purists begin lower in Ehrwald village for the full ascent.
The route stays in Austria until the last metres of ridge — carry ID for the summit border crossing.

One of the Northern Alps' great ridge traverses — a 5 km knife-edge from the Alpspitze along the Höllentalspitzen to the Zugspitze summit. Practical, gently arranged
T6 / UIAA III–. Exposed alpine ridge, loose rock, mandatory rope work. The Jubiläumsgrat-Biwak is emergency-only.
Only in a stable high-pressure window. Afternoon thunderstorms on the ridge are lethal — start at 4 a.m. from the Höllentalanger or the summit hotel.
Traditionally walked west to east (Alpspitze → Zugspitze), finishing at the summit cable car. Reverse is possible but harder to bail from.
First-timers should hire an IVBV/UIAGM-certified Bergführer from Garmisch or Grainau.

Routing policy
Every connector prioritises official hiking paths, forest tracks and quiet approach lanes suitable for walking with a pack. Busy roads, highways and shoulder-less rural roads are avoided; where no pedestrian alternative exists, the segment is shown as a public transit link instead of a hike. Ascent is called out clearly so the approach climb is never a surprise, and each walkable connector ships a valid GPX so hikers can download the approach alongside the main route.
